Fetus In Fetu

Who says you need an uterus, or even two X chromosomes, to carry a pregnancy?

Believe it or not, a 16-year-old boy was carrying its twin brother inside his body!

Doctors at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) yesterday operated on the boy named Abu Raihan and found a foetus-in-foeto--the term for such unborn foetus--weighing 1.5 kilograms.

The foetus was found with grown up hair, legs and the genital although the development of the head and brain was very little. It also had two teeth and two slightly developed hands.

It is a matter of surprise how a boy could carry a living "child" in his body without any uterus! "We were prepared for such a surprise," said Prof MA Majid of the surgery department. "Medical science says it is possible but this is the first such case in my professional life," said the former head of the surgery department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

From 9:00 am to 1:00pm a seven-member board conducted the operation and it was a successful operation, he said, adding that the boy is now out of danger and will not face any problem in future.

This part blew me away:

As far as location was concerned, it was predominantly retroperitoneal in 80% of cases, but could be atypical including the skull as in 6 cases, the sacrum as in 6 cases, the scrotum as in 1 case, and the mouth as in 1 case.

OK, I can see the gut, but scrotum and the MOUTH!?! That's freaking unbelievable!

Also there is this:

In almost all cases (88%), there was a single parasitic fetus apart from 5 reports in which the number of the fetus ranged from 2 to 5.

5 fetuses in one person!?! And remember, each of those fetuses is a special, unique snowflake! Have you hugged a fetus in fetu today?

About 10 years ago my aunt became extremely ill (to the point where it was thought she would die). She ended up with an intestinal blockage and it was discovered that she had fetus in fetu that for some reason only began causing problems when she was in her 50s. Took awhile for a diagnosis, and she spent a good 6 weeks in hospital recovering from illness and surgery. Needless to say, everyone was extremely surprised.

omg my great grandmother died 2 years ago and only then, when she died at age 86 did they discover that she had a male fetus in fetu living inside of her abdomen for her entire life. The strange thing is that, the fetus in fetu was the size of a toddler and was fully developed.

i was 18 and started bleeding and was told i was pregnant, but there was a problem. i had a tumor- they removed the tumor when i was 16 1/2 weeks pregnant with my daughter and it was a fetus in fetu- dr. mccomb gso, nc was my doctor at the time and he laughed as he told of how 2 of the nurses fainted when they removed the almost 7 pound fetus..

My aunt had a case of this where they found the fetus in fetu when she was in her 30's. I have no doubt this can happen.

The "tumor" they removed from her had hair, teeth, bones, arms, legs, and a primative head. It was about 4 pounds.

"Fetus in fetu is such a rare condition that only some 91 cases worldwide have ever been reported."

Well, six of the 91 cases worldwide just spoke up. Imagine that! Come on now, some of you are making up stories. Especially the one about the retarded (misspelled in the blog) rape-baby.

Just my honest opinion. It just seems extremely rare that only 91 cases have EVER been reported in the WORLD and the odds are against the idea that so many of you, statistically, would show up here to report yours or your fried of a friend's case.

To Anonymous 4:58pm: Perhaps the six people speaking up are mistaking teratomas for fetus in fetu...

My sister was just found to be suffering from fetus in fetu. She is almost 19 years old and a second fully developed uterus and other tissue-structures were found inside her abdomen. Please raise awareness about this condition. It is frightening and psychologically damaging to the host-twin. My sister is currently waiting to be operated on and is trying to deal with this horrifying news.

i have known someone that has suffered from fetus in fetu. she was 15 years old at the time & the fetus presented itself as a tumor on her ovary. once she had the surgery and they disected the tumor they found something very strange. this tumor had hair, teeth and muscles. the fact that 6 of the 91 cases reported worlwide came to this website is not strange. I think they are looking for someone who has something in common with them. woulnd't you? the girl i know just feels that people will never understand what she has endured.

Many ovarian tumours can have hair and teeth inside them - it's not the same thing as a fetus in fetu. Like it was mentioned previously there's only been 91 cases in the world... ever...

At 11:15 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

According to msnbc.com, fetus in fetu occurs one in every 500,000 live births. I read this on an article they had on there today 11/24/06 about a chilean boy that had been operated on that had a fetus removed from his stomach.

Tumors found with hair and teeth are called teratomas and happen in both males and females.

My cousin jack had fetus in fetu, it didn't really bother him until one day it decided to come tearing out of his chest like that creature in Alien. I'm dead serious, it happened in front of about twenty people. THe thing looked like a very short skeleton with eyeballs and muscles covering it-it didn't have any skin. Anyway, it ran off into the woods and has been menacing our farm ever since.

Exactly how is it that there are only 90 or so documented cases of fetus in fetu in the world yet all of you seem to have an immediate family member afflicted with this problem. Give me a break!

At 4:57 AM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Please understand, that the post which stated that people who have been one of the cases of this medical marvel do their own google search in hopes to find others in which have endured what they have, so they can relate to someone. 90 plus documented cases, with more being discovered regularly, it is ignorant to assume that those who are stating their stories on this blog are lying, and how can it be possible that people can be true about their stories on here. It makes a lot of sense that those who have had this as an expierence in their lives would come on here to share their stories, seeking other individuals who they can relate to. And Yes teratoma's can have teeth and hair, but with fetus in fetu, bones, genitals and other key elements are discovered in order to rule out the teratomas. In 1990, in buffalo Ny at the age of 10- turning 11, I was rushed into emergency surgery. My entire childhood, I was known as the girl who would puke constantly, I had constant pain, and a very bloated stomach, yet very skinny everywhere else. I went thru a lot of ridicule from medical doc's and school nurses and even my own family, that I was faking my pain, that I was bulimic, that I just wanted attention... till one fine day, after many wrong diagnosises, I collapsed and was brought to children's hospital where they did an ultrasound, and then my "act" wasn't such an act anymore, as you could see what looked like a baby inside of me via the ultrasound. I was seven centimeters dialated at my cervix, because my body was trying to pass it out on its own, my right kidney was flat like a pancake and shutting down, and due to the size of my twin brother I was knocking on death's door... Needless to say, long story short, they discovered my twin brother inside me. I am in medical journals and I was basically a guinea pig for tons of docs, lots flew in from all over the world. When they removed him, they discovered, arms, legs, hair, teeth, eyes, spine and a penis/genitalia. So some of you on this forum need to give those who are ligit a break, as I googled fetus in fetu (my previous condition) to find out more information. Because just because he has been removed along with my ovaries he was attached to, having that as part of my life is a huge struggle, and I would love to talk with others who have had this in their lives, because it is so unique and rare, and people need support and people need to be able to relate with others, and being one person who has been thru this, I would like nothing more than to be able to discuss the feelings that still linger from this expierence in my life. They may have removed him and my reproductive organs during this surgery, but the pain, the loss, will always be there. Being able to relate with others can help tremendously. So that is why I am leaving this message. To let you know in 1990, I became one of those people who stunned and shocked the medical community. Have some respect when you write your comments on here, because it's extremely rude to discount someone's expierences in life. Being one of the cases, does make me feel special, but it doesn't take away the pain, the wonder, and the longing for connection with others who have been on the same boat. So you give me a break!

At 7:50 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

Talk about breaks. Before any of us actually believe these stories, do a little research on the web. In the first ten hits on Google, you'll find not only a link to this page, but links to other pages which completely debunk the comments posted by all these "Gee-that-happened-to-me-or-my-grandma" folks. Even the little woman, Stephanie, whose cervix was supposedly dilated to 7 cm. as her body tried to birth her fully-formed twin brother - at AGE NINE. Just READ the medical references! Fetus in fetu occurs in monozygotic, monochorionic pregnancies, where there is a common placenta. That means IDENTICAL twins, folks, and that also means a woman or girl cannot possibly be carrying a BOY fetus in fetu within her body. The instances also occur 2:1 males over females, which means there are 50% more men than women who are afflicted with this INCREDIBLY rare occurance. When the statistic "one in 500,000" was mentioned, it was not one in 500,000 live births, it was one in 500,000 monozygotic twin pregnancies, and most of those don't survive until birth, AND that is just an estimate.

Honestly, people, some of these may be legitimate teratomas, but I doubt very very seriously that any of them are true cases of fetus in fetu.

Except the guy whose cousin Jack had one burst from his chest. That one I believe. (SMILE)

Goodnight, I am female 23years living in the caribbean. I have never heard of such cases in Trinidad. Very interesting though. I have a question? How can a fetus in fetu live or survive without rotting in the Host's body??? How is it possible that a fetus in fetu can remain in persons after so much years and not rot and poison their bodies? Strange. I'd like to know. Because if a pregnant female has a dead fetus in her womb she better remove it quikly because she will die.

At 6:25 PM, Anonymous Kathleen said...

Sadia,to answer your questions fetus in fetu is when someone has a parasitic twin inside of them normally getting nutrients from an umbilical cord type structure or sometimes a blood vessel attached to a vein or artery which supplies to parasitic twin with blood, hence no rotting. The fetus inside the host is actually alive but it wouldn't be able to survive with the host.

Also I think it is possible to have a fetus living inside you which is of the opposite sex because fetus in fetu is formed when one twin in a way surrounds the other twin early enough to not be fully formed but late enough to not fuse together and form a chimera (where two fraternal twins fuse together and form one person but a bit like a jigsaw with parts from both twins).

I find it very annoying to see people take the mick out of this condition. It's so juvenile. I hope reading this you feel stupid because I'm sixteen and I'm probably more mature than you are. Have a little consideration for other people's feelings.

I've been researching this for awhile, its pretty interesting but I cannot find any articles that talk about what causes the child or their parents to realize something is wrong. Obviously one symptom would be distended abdomen, but there has to be some type of pressure and other organs must be suppressed. What if a child presented with this did not have a distended stomach. What is the first step in diagnosis? You would assume they would first do an ultrasound. However if a child is two or three and they are unable to communicate exactly what the problem is, what type of pain and where in the abdomen it is, how can you be sure it isn't just indigestion? I guess what I am really trying to ask, is what symptoms could lead you to believe it was some other abdominal disorder?

20 years ago I went to the doctors and it was discovered that either I was 4 months pregnant or a tumor (this was at planned parenthood). First one, no, so onto the OB-GYN. They discovered that I had a tumor size of a grapefruit surrounding my ovary (I was 17 at the time with no idea that this was there) and needed surgery at ASAP. I had surgery and they diagnosed me with durmoid cyst meaning that I had it since birth and it took 17 years to develop into something serious. My tumor also had hair and teeth and the doctor's questioned, not diagnosed whether it was my twin??? Who knows, but it was quite an experience and the beginning of many other gynecological issues.

In Stephen King book the Dark Half fetus in fetu happened in the head. If absorbtion happens in the very early stage when the fetus is not even fully formed isn't it a little logical that the in fetu twin can pop up in any part of the body? I just became aware that it is something that can happen for real and not just something that Stephen King made up. One thing I have discovered is that Sanju Bhagat has a lot of people complaining about their stomachs. The WWW.COM it is the most amazing man made wonder.

People, this is really true,I went through the same thing when I was 17 years old, doctors had to remove one from me. It had bones, hair, teeth etc.
this note is for the people that are so closed minded, open up your brain and belive. It happened to me. I was 16 years old

When i was only 7 years old, year 1997 i also had a fetus on fetu incident. I undergone an operation in my womb when i experienced very painful cramps in my stomach and womb for almost 3 days, my left ovary and Fallopian tube was taken. The symptoms occurred after my cousin accidentally jumped on my womb when we're playing. The doctors that operates me also taught it's a fetus on fetu but during that time it was something very very rare so they just called it Benign Ovarian Cysts. The stuff consist of bones, hairs and signs of tooth. Now I'm already 21 years old eventhough i'm having a problem with my monthly period and my hips became bigger im fine^^

I'm a fetus in fetu survivor, my sister was removed from me in 2005. They classed her as alive because she was using my blood supply and thus had formed to some degree. I was seen as a freak by the doctors who swarmed around my hospital bed just before surgery due to what they were seeing on the ultrasound (they failed to tell me of course and even after she was removed they would not say anything...I had to go and see my own GP who finally told me the truth). I was a rare case for the UK back in 2005 due to the location she was found (attached to the lining of my bowl). Apparently there had been no reported cases world wide of being found in such a location as usually are found attached to the stomach or re-producing organs. Mine was attached to the lining of the bowl and considered alive as she was feading off my blood supply. If she had developed we would have been siamese twins and sharing the bowl no doubt. She was 15cm in diameter, had skin, nails, teeth, hair, brain and heart tissue. She had some semi developed limbs (I was told legs and partially developed upper limbs. She was never picked up on ultrasound as such medical procedues didn't exist in 1972. I was in total shock, felt utter guilt for surviving and the utter grief for loosing her. As a child I used to ask where my twin was and my mother would just say I was being silly and only I had popped out. So it amazes me just how early in development your memories are formed even in the womb for me to have known there was another baby. If she had of grown she would have been my siamese twin and I now refer to her as Emily. My mother refuses to speak about it.
