Pope Benedict XVI's Final Word on the Case of the Nine-Year-Old Rape Victim Who Underwent an Abortion

Pope Benedict XVI and the Catholic Church have come out with the definitive pronouncement on the case of the 9-year-old Brazilian girl who was raped by her stepfather and underwent a therapeutic abortion: the Ob/Gyn who performed the abortion and the parent who consented, still totally excommunicated.

Apparently, the Catholic Sky Fairy wanted to make sure you didn't get the wrong impression from the Brazilian bishops who overturned the original excommunication or from Monsignor Rino Fisichella's gentle criticism of insensitivity.

So the Catholic Sky Fairy told the Pope to tell you that a therapeutic abortion constitutes a grave offense that does irreparable harm to the whole of society.

In other words, formal cooperation in emptying the uterus of products of conception constitutes a grave offense punishable by excommunication. On the other hand, allowing a 9-year-old kid to die a slow and painful death constitutes a whimsical gaffe, free of repercussions, one sanctioned by the Catholic Sky Fairy as an invaluable benefit to the whole of society.

No wonder President Obama recently explicitly expressed his commitment to Pope Pope Benedict XVI to reducing the number of abortions and to listen to the Church's concerns on moral issues. Withholding needed medical treatment from little kids and allowing them to drop dead prematurely in droves under the watchful eye of the Catholic church will go a long way towards insuring there will be fewer sexually mature people around capable of becoming pregnant. Brilliant plan if you ask me.

Came here from the pharyngula blog.

It's really incredible. This is even more bizarre than some South Park episode would have been able to come up with.

So, Christian morality actually has nothing to do with the health and the safety of little children? More to protect perverted old men? Perhaps the exclusively male clergy, with their enforced celibacy, are a little envious of the scumbag step-father who raped this poor little girl? or do they think she was 'asking for it' by dressing 'provocatively'?

BTW, I think your comment on Obama's stance is a little unfair, the link you provided says nothing of the sort!

Check your facts before you post nonsense. The young lady was in no health danger from her pregnancy.

She and the grandmother were working closely with the Church - it was the mother, at the behest of Planned Parenthood reps who flew into the country for the deal, who insisted on the abortion.

And the "contents of the uterus" was a baby with a heartbeat, brainwaves, memory and could cry like any other newborn once it got air in its lungs.

So, yeah, killing children in order to satisfy your bloodlust... yeah, that makes sense. To you.

"Satisfy bloodlust?" Seriously, Steve? Do you honestly believe people are eager to kill off life?

This is a nine year old. You didn't consider her life at all, did you?

Well alrighty then, let's check:
"Fatima Maia, director of the public university hospital where the abortion was performed, said the 15-week-old pregnancy posed a serious risk to the 80-pound girl.

'She is very small. Her uterus doesn't have the ability to hold one, let alone two children,'
"

And, for the record, a 15 week fetus is not "like any other newborn". If born it would not cry, it would simply die.

Anon @ 11:01 AM,

It's in the top of the second paragraph:

Vatican spokesperson the Rev. Federico Lombardi said that the pope told him how Obama "explicitly expressed his commitment to reducing the number of abortions and to listen to the Church's concerns on moral issues"....

Anyway, the point I was trying to make with that bit was that, at a minimum, an outfit that considers therapeutic abortion a grave offense that does irreparable harm to society should have no role in reality-based discussions about abortion. Instead, the group and its leader in a funny hat get a public health commitment from our president. Where's the logic in that?

At 9:29 PM, Anonymous Anonymous said...

OK ema, I concede that - but this reported 'commitment' is not only second-hand, but third-hand - I wonder what Obama -really- said? and will we ever find out?

I don't know how Steve can hold such disgraceful views, and carry on as if nothing was wrong? Killing real, actual, children who exist right now is not a crime in his book?? A blob of partially differentiated cells, with no nervous system, no brain, no thoughts, no feelings, no 'soul' is way more important than that little girl? Seriously??

One more reason to believe that all organized religions are a bunch of crap! Who in their right mind can believe the word of a man who wears funny hats and spouts ridiculous beliefs of a man who lives in the sky over evidence proven by science? A bible is not a history book. 3 little pigs can't really build a house. Those are called 'Fairy Tails' boys and girls.
Can you say "Darwin" ? Go ahead! Try it !! "D - A - R - W - I - N"!
There you go! Welcome to reality!

As a true believer and mother I say leave the Catholic church ...No church can save you only the Blood of the Lamb which is Jesus the Christ. That woman's child was her first concern..No raped nine year old should be forced to have a baby. Any inconsiderate selfish, egocentric, chauvanistic, moron would not expect her to.
A nine year old having a baby is high risk. Do the research. This child did nothing to become pregnant but be raped, she is a victim ...first from her step father and now from the Catholic church.
May God forgive those who play God on earth
Jesus said I am the way and the truth and the life no man comes to the Father but by Me not the Catholic Church!

How sweet of you to be so snippy and condescending about a major world religion. Maybe you need to find God yourself before you pass judgement on others.

First raped by a man...
then raped by an institution...
then raped yet again by all those who "use" her situation to promote their own religious (or anti-religious) assumptions...
It's all sick.
Don't be sick.

Steve Kellmeyer,

List the following (assume near term twin pregnancy): uterine size, fetal measurements, amniotic fluid volume, placental size. Then list the expected complications associated with pregnancy at the extremes of age.

Now, defend your bizarre assertion that [t]he young lady was in no health danger from her pregnancy.

And the "contents of the uterus" was a baby with a heartbeat, brainwaves, memory and could cry like any other newborn once it got air in its lungs.

Incorrect. The contents of the uterus where products of conception--placenta/s, membranes, fluid, twin fetuses (who, try as they may, were unable to recall their ability to breath since, you know, it was nonexistent).

So, yeah, killing children in order to satisfy your bloodlust... yeah, that makes sense. To you.

Your hysteria is misplaced. You need to direct it at the Catholic church; they're the ones advocating killing little kids, not me.

How minor does a religious sect have to be before we may be permitted to snark about it?

Also, maybe the Catholic god needs to find its God before decreeing that withholding needed medical treatment from a kid constitutes a grave offense that does irreparable harm to the whole of society.

Anon @ 8:05 PM,

Way to minimize what happened to this poor girl, good job! There was one, and only one rapist, the stepfather. Period.

A young girl was raped. An even younger and more defenseless child was slaughtered in the womb. Two heinous crimes.

At 9:52 PM, Blogger ema said...

Anon @ 4:09 PM,

In what sense of the word is something that's a threat to your bodily integrity and your eventual killer "defenseless"?

Also, if a therapeutic abortion is a heinous crime[], on par with rape no less, the crime committed by the younger...defenseless child when it kills the young girl is super-duper heinous, yes?

I would just like to comment -

You - you who are on the so-called pro-life side - I am guessing that many of you are meat eaters - that is to say, people who would sluaghter an animal with twice the awareness and life of any fifteen week fetus? So only human life matters? (p.s. - I am not a vegeterian . I was just pointing out your hypocrisy)
