Dear [Dean],
I am an Ob/Gyn and a medblogger and I am emailing you to alert you to the fact that one of your nursing students, Ben Cochran, appears to be incompetent. Based on his article, Mr. Cochran:
People go to the doctor when they’re sick.
1) Is unfamiliar with the concept of preventive medicine and all that it entails.
What girl have you ever heard of that goes to a doc in the box for birth control?
2) Has no understanding of student healthcare.
If you have a lung problem, you see a pulmonologist. If you have a heart problem, you see a cardiologist. If you have a cunt problem, you see a gynecologist.
3) Knows nothing about the scope of practice of Pediatricians, Family Practitioners, Nurse Practitioners, or, for that matter, Ob/Gyns.
If you have a cunt problem, you see a gynecologist....Go read your Redbook in the lobby of a specialist while you get a mani as you wait to get your hatchet wound inspected....Please take your gaping holes elsewhere for medical services, and leave the real health issues to those that actually belong on a college campus.
4) Doesn't have even a rudimentary understanding of the anatomy and physiology of the female reproductive tract or the morbidity and mortality of pregnancy.
First of all, not even porn stars need that much birth control.
5) Is stumped by the mechanism of action, and the indications for use, of [hormonal] birth control.
Second of all, do you mean to seriously tell me that I’ve been sitting here in misery for the last half an hour just so that this gaggle of preemie sluts could get a free pass on harlotry?...I don't take issue with sex mongers. They serve their place. Hell, according to the bible, it's the oldest known profession on earth. So you sultry sex fiends are clearly established, but this is a place of higher being.
6) Is under the mistaken impression that medical competence and professionalism are optional and only apply to patients he deems worthy.
Bottom line: I hope you will consider providing Mr. Cochran with the remedial training he so desperately needs before certifying him competent to render care to any patients.

Look, this is a university—an ivory tower of academic prowess. We don’t need to be handing out birth control left and right especially from an on campus location. This is a bastion for the intellectually competent. If you find your talents to lend themselves to a more base and carnal nature, perhaps this just isn’t the place for you.

Still though, this is someone that just got dumped by his first girlfriend, let's go easy on him. It was obviously an extremely short term relationship, no one could stay with that for more than 3 days, but who are we to place our arbitrary time limits on how long a relationship has been before it's meaningful.
When he gets over it, he should be fine. You'll see, 50 or 60 years later he'll look back at this as a different man.

Normally I hate this joke but MAN does this situation seem to merit it: "He's just bitter because he couldn't make it as a doctor."
Nice bedside manner you've got, Cochran. Have you considered possibly getting into a related field, possibly working in a mortuary rather than a hospital?

I'm amazed that anyone would publish such a piece of garbage, even in highly edited form.
I also find it pretty funny that they (The East Carolinian) are standing by publishing it, pointing to their support of freedom of expression. Give me a break! Freedom of expression doesn't mean they have to publish idiotic rants from sexist morons. If he wants to express his imbecilic opinion, he is free to do so, but no editor is obligated to publish his opinion.
If I was an editor and that poorly written drivel slid across my desk it would slide straight into the garbage. If he wants people to know he is a sexist fool, he can start a blog or post it on his facebook.

Where are you getting the idea he's a nursing student? I don't see it mentioned at all in Rebekah Todd's blog, and PZ seems to have gotten the impression from you. But according to his Facebook page (eww), he "studied English Language and Literature". Nothing there about nursing or health care, either.

I'm terribly sorry, but given the high volume of religious people venting their hatred in print and on line these days towards various people, politicians, organizations, etc., I can say they use that word plus many, many more.
Besides, degrading language towards women goes along with most religious attitudes towards them.
My gaydar wasn't activated at all by that guy's rant, but my misogynistic-bitter-asshole-dar was. Gay men may not be attracted to women, but they have more respect for them than this douche lord. Good for you for reporting him. Someone that hateful & ignorant has no business being a nurse. What if he had to care for a teenage mother? The editors should not have published Ben's garbage. Everyone in the U.S. has a right to free speech, but no one has a right to an audience for that speech, and there is no right to use anybody's publication as a conduit to an audience.

I am not a believer in Karma in the cosmic sense of the word, but I do believe in Google Karma. Every stupid thing you do will come back to haunt you. Would have liked to see some more explanations on what actually is the case, that would have been nice. (E.g., what the field of the ob/gyn does encompass - saying it's not one thing is nice in this context, but some of us might have interests beyond that, plus it's the proper thing to do science-wise)
This is what you get when someone goes into nursing for the money. My wife has 30 years in as a nurse as did her mother before her. The last thing they ever think about is the pay. This disgusting pos has no business in nursing, or the human race for that matter. It sickens me to think this jerk will end up working in a nursing home.

as a male nursing student I think he should be denied his license unless he can somehow prove that he can overcome his ignorant, misogynistic lack of character enough to do his duty as a nurse. He exhibits an appalling lack of dignity. it's a real disapointment
I believe the paper was performing a public service by publishing this, to let women and men on campus know what a misogynistic fool walks in their midst. This may well serve as interesting fodder for discussion with Ben's future prospective employers.
Not only should this reprobate not be allowed anywhere near another human being as a health professional, I think sterilization .. nah strike that .. make that mandatory gelding would be the best course of action for our "Renaissance Intellectual".

Agreed, if I were writing a blog post. An email to the head of a nursing school is a different matter. No need to elaborate, she knows exactly what I mean.
For example, she knows that OCPs are routinely dispensed by non Ob/Gyns, she knows there's no longer a recommendation for a pelvic exam before dispensing OCPs, and she most certainly knows the difference between having a [vagina] problem and needing contraception.
Something like a Bartholin cyst requires a visit to a gynecologist; getting OCPs does not.

Also, he's wrong about "lung problem = pulmonologist". I usually see my PCP for my moderate asthma. My pulmonologist consults, as does my allergist (allergic asthma can be seen by either specialty, or as in my case, both). I see the pulmonologist and the allergist each about once a year, and I might be discharged from my pulmonologist's care in another six months or so if all goes well.
So, at least for asthma, lung problem doesn't always need a pulmonologist... for stuff like medication refills and well checkups, seeing the pulmo is kinda like using heavy artillery to swat mosquitos.
Plus, he's creepy. His attitude reminds me very much of an asshole in my high school... who later turned out to be doing some Very Bad Things. He sets my Dangerous Creep O' Meter off to about 11 on a 10-point scale.
His anger indicates that he is unsuited to be a nurse. His misogyny makes him a poor candidate to work with women, either as colleagues or patients. He will bring his distorted attitudes into a profession whose members and leaders are mostly women and he will constantly be in trouble, which he will then blame on the women around him. I was a physician assistant for twenty years and I can tell you that this guy will get nowhere in medicine. I wouldn't have wanted this creature of darkness treating my patients, and I wouldn't let him treat me, let alone my wife or daughter.
Well, he is just a student so still has much to learn. I hope this exposure will help him on his way, but I suspect he'll soon call persecution.

I sent an email as well, both to the dean of the nursing school and to the dean of students. Cochran may be gloating on his Facebook page right now, but I bet come tomorrow he won't be feeling quite so proud of himself.
I don't think there should be any way he could make amends and continue in the nursing profession. His attitude is absolutely deplorable. There is NO way to apologize for it. He should be kicked out of the program posthaste!
I'm so disgusted by this that I can't stand aside and not interject my opinion into this. Although, I do have sympathy for the Dean. I'm sure she's gotten quite a few emails about Cochran by now.

Depressed, really depressed after reading Mr Cochran's hideous article. The thought of him administrating to women or even worse, young girls leaves me cold. One would hope that his article would be enough for him to be booted out. He doesn't need remedial action as urgently as a frontal lobotomy.
Did his undergrad at USC. Naturally. What an achievement for the Cocks. I attended for three of four years (spent the second to last in Canterbury) and actually grew up in my time there. Apparently he lived in a dorm which insulated him from that opportunity. South Carolina has turned out some very decent young men over the years--I would hate for this one to inordinately mar the reputation of my alma mater. That said, if he ever manages to find a job in health care it is a sign of the downfall of the American hospital system, and I hope his nose is broken when the doors to the university slam in his face.

I'm guessing by your name, your attitude, and your comment that you're not among the half of the human race (a) being shamed for sexual activity, (b) having your genitalia referred to as hatchet wounds and gaping holes, and (c) being told to take your petty preventative medicine elsewhere so that doctors cant treat more important things, like mens' colds. You'll forgive me if I find the rant less than whimsical.
Considering Mr. Cochran's clear and public rejection of professionalism, his contempt for women and his astoundingly unashamed selfishness, he should seriously reconsider his future. The nursing profession does not need self-opinionated people who do not care; he's a law suit waiting to happen. I'm sure he would be far happier in a job that does not involve any contact with humanity.

He’s obviously not taking any of this seriously. I took a screenshot and sent it to the Dean of Nursing. She replied that “We are addressing this issue with Mr. Cochran.” It’s been over a week now and no one with any authority has spoken out on this issue. While I believed this when she said it on Sunday it has lost any credibility in the interim.
